About The Barn

The Story of Hickory Run Farm

Step into the history of Hickory Run Farm, a property rooted in Ohio history and cared for by the Smith family for more than 40 years.

A Farm With Deep Ohio Roots

Hickory Run Farm was established in 1823, and the historic farmhouse that stands today was originally constructed in 1823 using hand-hewn logs joined with traditional mortise-and-tenon construction. Tamarack logs were used for the roof trusses, reflecting the craftsmanship and building methods of the time. The Smith family has called this special place home for the past 40 years.

The 1932 Bank Barn

Built in 1932 for the Henry and Elizabeth Witmer family, the bank barn became an important part of Hickory Run Farm’s history. Their daughter, Edna, and her husband, Mahlon Miller, later continued the family’s dairy operation., raising their family and carrying on the farm’s agricultural tradition.
Once a working agricultural space, the barn has been thoughtfully restored and adapted for today’s gatherings. The haymow now provides a unique gathering space for groups of up to 50 people, combining the character of the original barn with a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

From Dairy Barn to Farm Stay

The lower level of the bank barn once served as the milking parlor when Hickory Run Farm supplied milk to Lawson’s. Today, that space has been thoughtfully transformed into a comfortable two-bedroom, adults-only apartment for overnight guests. The apartment accommodates up to four adults and includes a farm-style breakfast, offering visitors the opportunity to experience a little more of life at Hickory Run Farm. For the comfort of all guests, the apartment is non-smoking and does not allow pets.

A Collection That Tells a Story

Another barn on the property houses a carefully curated collection of pioneer antiques. These pieces offer a glimpse into the lives of early Ohio settlers and the tools, furnishings, and everyday objects they used as they lived and worked. The collection adds another layer of history to the Hickory Run Farm experience.
